Due to its location between the sea and the mountain, the town enjoys a privileged natural and scenic setting, with farms scattered all around. Of its past history, there remain today interesting relics which, associated with contemporary art shows, create favourable conditions for taking a walk down the town’s historical and artistic memory lane. Other distinguishing marks of Zarautz are its small palaces and stately homes whose architecture bear witness of the town’s tourist tradition as headquarters of the royalty and aristocracy in the 19th century. The result is a nice tourist town and a symbol of quality of life that its inhabitants take pride in sharing with visitors.
