Brittany: Vannes goes back in time
With some 272 edifices classified as Historical Monuments, behind its city walls Vannes, the capital of Morbihan, hides a past charged with history. Every year at the Fêtes Historiques, the town proudly re-enacts its long life story.
Built in an amphitheatre at the base of the Morbihan Gulf, this old mediaeval town has for centuries revolved round the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, comfortably surrounded by solid ramparts. For three days in July every year, ‘the city of the Vénètes’, looks back upon its history and flicks through the pages of its rich past. A chance to celebrate the characters who have left their mark on the town, but also to delve into a mediaeval atmosphere with the flavour of times gone by: jousting, street theatre, concerts
