Basque Country | The port of Getaria
Basque Country / Getaria. The port of Getaria is still one of the most emblematic spots in town for Getaria has a great fishing tradition because it is municipality’s main economic activity.
Mount San Antón, widely known as the Mouse of Getaria, goes deep into the sea and shelters the port from where Middle Age’s ships departed to go whaling. That is the reason why a whale appears carved in the town’s coat of arms. Getaria has traditionally been a village of fishermen and great sailors such as Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to circumnavigate the world. For hundreds of years whaling was of great importance to the town’s economy.
